Is There a Difference Between Content Marketing and SEO?

What is the Difference Between Content Marketing and SEO?Everyone in the digital marketing industry is talking about content marketing and Search Engine Optimization (SEO), debating which is more beneficial and releasing best practices for both methods. However, we want to ask a different question: is there really a difference between content marketing and SEO?

Yes…

Search Engine Land defines SEO as “the process of getting traffic from the ‘free,’ ‘organic,’ ‘editorial’ or ‘natural’ search results on search engines.” In a nutshell, SEO is the process of receiving traffic from having a website containing content that answers questions or defines terms accurately, adheres to the needs of the users and is visually appealing and engaging, relative to specific search terms.

While it does somewhat overlap with general SEO strategy, content marketing is a specific method of achieving success regarding organic ranks. Content marketing is the process of adding significant, relevant key terms within a website’s content as well as producing relevant content on a regular basis related to a specific industry (i.e. a blog) and sharing such information across social media platforms.

…and No

Although content marketing and SEO are different marketing practices by definition, content marketing does increase SEO. While the two methods tend to be executed in different ways, they’re both working towards the same goal – more front-page organic search results. It is rare to find a front-page ranking site that has poor content marketing or SEO. In this case, it takes two to tango.
